STAIRWAYS / STEPS AND WALKWAYS SAFETY

Stairways, steps, and walkways should be kept in good repair and well lighted. Stairways with three or more steps should have handrails on both sides. Handrails should be securely mounted to the walls or stairs.

All freestanding stairs (not between walls), balconies, landings, porches and similar structures must have protective railings. The balusters (upright spokes) of handrails should be less than 3-1/2 inches apart to prevent children from slipping through. The bottom rail should be less than 6 inches above the floor to prevent children from slipping under.

Note: This information is not intended to take the place of your state's or locality's child care regulations and laws. In every case, the laws and regulations of the city, county, and state in which the child care facility is located must be carefully followed even if they differ from these recommendations.
